UN envoy hits Israel 'apartheid'

A UN human rights envoy has compared Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories to elements of apartheid.

The UN's Special Rapporteur, John Dugard, describes the regime as being designed to dominate and systematically oppress the occupied population.

Mr Dugard is a South African professor of international law assigned to monitor Israeli human rights abuses.

In a new report, Mr Dugard says: "Israel's laws and practices certainly resemble aspects of apartheid".

Its an occupation. Its not supposed to be fair, nice, gentle, or good. Its an occupation. Of course its similar to a system whereby one people was dominated by another people. Thats what occupation it.

its not the first time they've done that and you can view the reports going back years. they blame israel for it.

you do have to wonder though whether the israelis might be suffering some variation of stockholm syndrome in that it was only a lifetime ago that another country walled off an area and started starving the people in there. you can't fail to see the comparison when they do to someone else what was done to them. I think the majority of people does not see it your way.

Israel is always shown as the Victim, which is Defending itself.

Palestinians are always shown as the attackers, the terrorists.

Mass Media plays a big role here.

Especially in the United States - who is a big ally of Israel.

But this kind of regimes, which hold one territory under occupation are all similar - just as Saddam held his people in Chess, and White Man is South Africa holds Africans in Chess, Israel is holding Palestine.

If several prominent Africans that lived under Apartheid have agreed, Jimmy Carter has written a book about it, numerous human rights organizations have proclaimed it to be so, what makes anyone believe that Israel or the USA for that matter will give 2 shots if the UN says it as well.
They claim Israel proper is not an apartheid state as they don't count Gaza and the West Bank as being part of their country even though they do occupy it. This is their "out". They disregard ICJ rulings, UN general resolutions, and routinely cross borders of sovereign nations at a whim...do you seriously think they care one way or another if the UN says they are apartheid or not? To them, anyone that critisizes their messed up government is anti-semetic anyway.

Perhaps israel should cede more territory to the palestinians.among their shortages are decent launch pads for them to fire their missiles at innocents..

Yes and perhaps somebody could sell some tanks to the Palestinians too, since their pathetic weapons really have no effect at all - when you check out the numbers of tanks and other military equipment used by the IDF:

Yeah and we all know that Israeli IDF/IAF are such accurate marksmen. I can't remember the last time an innocent Palestinian civilian was killed.

i believe the thread had to do with aparteid.in my sarcastic way pointed out why israel favors this version.who would want a potential assasin in his house?

Drive the Palestinians out of the country?

Or any other form of Endlösung?

the solution is the disarming of palestinian terror groups followed by national boundaries for palestine.without both neither will succede,imo.

Sounds simple right? But before any of the Palestinians will put down his AK, there must be Justice in this lands. First the violent politics of Apartheid towards the People of Palestine must stop. Then the violent and ugly occupation and colonization of Lands of People of Palestine must stop. Because when your home is destroyed, your parents are dead, your relatives are deported, your land is taken, your can not go to work, because the soldiers do not allow you to pass the checkpoint and just for the funk of it, every day an Israeli jet performs a sonic boom over your head - you are actually left without much options.

Who cares either way really, israel is occupying the west bank, calling it 'like apartheid' is silly, its a military occupation.

Except that this is a military occupation, the blacks in south africa were supposed to be south african citizens, not an occupied people. The palestinians are occupied, thus, we already know that their situation is 'apartheid-like', heck, its worse, its a direct military occupation.

The palestinians should sue for peace.

The entire logic of the occupation is that hte palestinains haven't surrendered and haven't given up the war.

So give up. It will pull the rug out from under the occupation.

Sure, they won't get jerusalem or israel 'back', but that pretty clearly ain't going to happen anyway. Unless there was a really big war. And if there was, and the palestinians ahd already 'sued for peace' to end the occupation, well they could just take up arms again anyway, it'd be their legal right to do so.

No Peace, no Justice. Peace has to come first, then they can have justice. This isn't a domestic problem, its an international problem, they went to war, calling for justice, and lost the war. Now they have to decide if they want peace, or war, 'justice' is out of the question, you can't settle 'justice' in the middle of a war.

As they are permited. The palestinians and yehudis went to war. The palestinians lost. Thats why they are under occupation. If they want peace, they need to surrender, if they don't want peace, then, well, thats what they have now.

Well I really do not know who has/had it worse: the people of Palestine or the people of South Africac. Both "occupations" imposed on them were injust and completly racist. But the problem is that this kind of ruling of the states of South Africa and Israel is usually just ignored by the International community and the so-called "United Nations".

Give up? Are you crazy? Would you give up your own land, if it suddenly became occupied? I have a feeling you people kind of forgot, what is like to be under enemy occupation - and it is not a very good feeling, which you can just "ignore" and start to "sue for peace" and "surrender" or "give up". What if Churchill would say to the people of Great Britain in 1940, "Ah screw it, just give up and do NOT fight on the beaches, and do NOT fight in the citites, and do NOT fight in the woods, and do NOT fight on the seas. Just like Iraq - no Justice, no Peace.

First you have to cool down ALL sides, by setting equal rules for ALL.

That is called JUSTICE.

And if any side breaks it, you have to punish them EQUALLY.

And when the people will see that they are treated Equal, then they will slowly start to think, that they are actually protected by LAWS and REGULATONS, something what today people of Palestine are not.

All I see is Israel breaking 65 UN resolutions against them, keeping people of Palestine in small, tight, poor, Ghetto like cities, surrounded with tanks, artillery, soldeirs, and they just keep on bulldozing their homes and pulling out their hundred year old olive trees.

And you want PEACE first?
