Dozens of rebels cross border from Chechnya, seize hostages in a school in the neighboring Dagestan, Russian officials say.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia -- Russian officials say dozens of rebels have crossed the border from Chechnya, and seized hostages in a village school in the neighboring region of Dagestan.

Russia's ITAR-Tass news agency reported on Monday that at least three border guards were killed in the fighting, and several were injured.

damn, i wonder if the people in the school are young (i.e 5-10yr olds i hope not) i hope that they are old enough that these people can atlest fight back if need be.

Theres plenty OMON and SOBR (and MVD..) troops in the area..

And they have plenty experience on these kinds of missions..
(its their job..)

I think that i will end up ok.

And if not, the terrorists will be eliminated no matter what.

Above: a Russian soldier on the border in Dagestan.

Authorities say at least 25 gunmen crossed from Chechnya into the neighboring Russian region of Dagestan on Monday, killing at least three border guards and seizing dozens of hostages at a school in a remote mountain village.

Desperate ones. Kids are the psychological element, they think "they won't try nothing on us, having THIS type of hostages we are untouchable".

They're not terrorists, they're freedom fighters!!!!
They are outgunned so they have no choice but to resort to such tactics!!!

theatre incident.

Im sure that they handeled that in best way possible, and that nobody else wouldnt done it any better.

Lets remember, there was plenty suicide bombers there..

And one of the best handled it: FSB and Moscow Alpha group. (if not the best..)

Only thing that they messed up was that they didnt tell the doctors that what was the gas used.

They saved plenty of people from certain death.

I realize that,

Its just that this kinds of stunts dont work against Russians.
Stunts like these just make their responces more brutal.

Fry, there's a difference. Freedom fighters are the guys back in Grozny who made life hard on the Russians. Terrorists are the ones going after non-combattants deliberately.

These, my friend, are terrorists.

How is it any different than a hamas member blowing up a bus load of civilians in Tel Aviv?

HAMAS is a terrorist group, too. It isn't any different.

That's my point. Some (Fulcrum) like to hand pick who will be considered a terrorist though. Terrorism is terrorism. There is no justification for targetting civilians.

These too my friend are terrorists.

And really so are the HAMAS and whatever also..

Its totally different matter that have they or have they not a just cause..

But they still are terrorists.

I remember DeusEx's great post in the nonlethal weapons thread. DMSO would help them save plenty more peole.
The use of an opiate seems to be a strategical mistake...

No,

Like i said:

Mistake was that they didnt tell the doctors with what they had poisoned / knocked out them.

99% of the people 'poisoned' could have been saved if only had the doctors known..

And the reason why they didnt tell was cause use of this kind of CW agent isnt actually permited..

Its illegal..

As are many things that Russian security forces do, or at least it wouldnt make them look good if public would know the things they do, and methods they use..

Kids would of course die because of this, and I don't know how even tear gas actually works on children.

BUT
These are proffesionals.
We all know they can handle the situation.

just a thought on the last post about the Russians being professionals... I know I remember the theater incident when the terrorists from the same place stormed into a ballet and held the audience hostage until the Russian forces put that gas in there and killed all the terrorists and most of the remaining hostages. Now do you think this will be handled the same way or will the Russians negotiate fro the sake of children?

Man, check the numbers. What do you mean by MOST?

Well, this is their affair, they are to take care of the situation.
