The Indian Navt will soon take delivery of the USS Trenton, an amphibious landing platform dock

The US Navy is all set to hand over Seattle-built USS Trenton, an amphibious transport warship, to the Indian Navy. It will be the first American-made vessel to join India’s growing blue water fleet.

The USS trenton has been bought post the Tsunami relief operations. The Indian Navy rushed its ships to Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka & the Andaman & Nicobar islands after the disaster, to help with relief & rescue operations, only to find that all the landing jetties etc had also been washed away. Hence they felt the need for a ship like this.

What is more significant is the fact that this is the first US made ship EVER bought by the Indian Navy. Could this be the sign of things to come, especially as the 2 nations come ever closer in terms of strategic alliances?

The Indo-US civilian Nuclear deal is well known and talked about, as well as the fact that the Super Hornet & the F-16 (block 70?) are strong contenders in the MRCA deal.

Are we seeing the rapidly changing face of Indo-US ties?

The articles state that this the first ship of its kind for the Indian Navy. If however an indegenious version has been comissioned, details of the same would be very interesting indeed.

What this does is gave the Indian Navy ability to land troops en-masse for rescue & relief, as well as military operations. Something it could not do as yet, and which further advances its capabilties and 'threat factor'
