Australia's Petria Thomas clinched gold in the women's 100m butterfly final after holding off defending champion Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands.
Thomas won in 57.72 seconds with Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland second and world record holder de Bruijn in third.
Jedrzejczak finished in 57.84 to pip de Bruijn by 0.15 secs.
Britons Katy Sexton and Sarah Price failed to qualify for the finals of the women's 100m backstroke, finishing sixth and eighth in their semi-final.
In the women's 100m breaststroke semi-finals, Australia's Leisel Jones set a new Olympic record of 1:06.78, ahead of Germany's Sarah Poewe (1:07.48)
and Svitlana Bondarenko of Ukraine (1:08.28).
American Tara Kirk won the second 100m breaststroke semi-final in 1:07.60 with Brooke Hanson of Australia second in 1:07.75 and America's Amanda Beard
third in 1:07.92.
