ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Juan Garcia scored six goals and three other players added four each as Spain edged medal favorites South Korea 31-30 Saturday to open the Olympic men's handball competition.

Manual Colon, Talant Dujshebaev and Fernando Hernandez were the four-goal scorers while South Korea was led by Paek Won-chul and Yoon Kyung-min with six goals each.

South Korea had its run of two golds and a silver stopped in 2000, when it failed to win a medal. Croatia took the gold medal at Sydney.

In the other early match Saturday, Hungary beat Egypt 33-28. Captain Istvan Pasztor had nine goals, while Carlos Perez added seven for Hungary.

The 12-team men's competition will see four teams eliminated in group play. The remaining eight start the quarterfinals on Aug. 24.

Women's play begins Sunday.
