Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Kansas City optioned shortstop Angel Berroa, last year's American League Rookie of the Year, to Double-A Wichita on
Tuesday.
Berroa, who signed a four-year contract with a club option for the 2009 season in May, was batting .249 with five homers and 30 RBI this season for
the Royals.
To take Berroa's place, Kansas City recalled shortstop Andres Blanco from Wichita. Blanco, 20, signed with the team as non-drafted free agent four
years ago and made his major league debut earlier this season.
In 2003, Berroa hit .287 with 17 home runs and 73 runs batted in to win top AL rookie honors. He also led AL rookies in runs scored with 92.
In other news, the Royals have also recalled pitcher Jorge (Luis) Vasquez from Wichita and optioned pitcher Ryan Bukvich to Triple-A Omaha.
