Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators have re-signed defenseman Chris Phillips and forward Peter Schaefer to multi-year contracts, avoiding arbitration with the restricted free agents.

Phillips played in all 82 games for the Senators last season and finished with a career-best 23 points. He also scored a career-high seven goals and tied his personal best with 16 assists.

In seven NHL seasons, all with Ottawa, Phillips has 31 goals and 88 assists for 119 points in 467 regular-season games. The Calgary native has also added four goals and seven assists in 58 playoff games.

The Senators selected Phillips with the first overall pick of the 1996 Entry Draft.

Schaefer notched 15 goals and 24 assists for a career-high 39 points in 81 games last season. He also finished tied for second on the club with a plus-22 rating.

In five NHL seasons with Vancouver and Ottawa, Schaefer has 57 goals and 80 assists for 137 points in 334 games.

The Senators acquired the Saskatchewan native from the Canucks before the start of the 2002-03 season in exchange for defenseman Sami Salo.
