Boston, MA - The Boston Red Sox have acquired righthander Brandon Puffer from the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named later or cash
considerations.
It was the second trade of the day for a reliever for the Red Sox. Earlier, they acquired lefthander Jimmy Anderson from the Chicago Cubs in exchange
for minor league pitcher Andrew Shipman and a player to be named later.
The 28-year-old Puffer, who will now head to Triple-A Pawtucket, went 0-1 with a 5.50 ERA in 14 appearances this season for the Padres. He pitched for
Houston in 2002 and 2003.
In his minor league career, Puffer is 27-26 with 70 saves and a 3.24 ERA. That includes a 1-1 mark with two saves and a 3.34 ERA in 22 relief
appearances for Triple-A Portland this year.
Meanwhile, the Padres activated righthander Jake Peavy from the 15-day disabled list. Peavy has made nine starts this season and is 4-2 with a 2.01
ERA.
