SANTA CLARA, California (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers on Friday reached agreement with linebacker Jamie Winborn on a contract extension and released
safety Zack Bronson.
Terms of Winborn's extension were not disclosed.
Winborn had surgery last December to fuse two vertabrae in his neck, but participated in the team's passing camp.
A second-round pick in 2001, Winborn missed 18 games due to injuries over the last two seasons, but the Niners plan to start him at outside linebacker
with Julian Peterson. Jeff Ulbrich is the top reserve.
Bronson had spent his entire seven-year career with the 49ers. starting 39 games at both safety positions over the last four seasons. He had a
career-high seven interceptions in 2001.
Ronnie Heard replaced Bronson at free safety at the club's minicamp.
