(BBC Sports) - Joe Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren is trying to arrange a fight for him with boxing's new star Antonio Tarver.
"I spoke with team Tarver and they were very positive," said Warren.
Last weekend Tarver stopped Roy Jones Jr - previously thought the best pound for pound fighter in the world - to win the WBC light heavyweight title.
Welshman Calzaghe must first overcome IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson in their bout at Manchester's MEN Arena on 12 June.
That will be the Newbridge bruiser's first fight at the new weight, having reigned undefeated as WBO super middleweight champion for seven years.
"Obviously Joe has to beat Johnson first, and we can't take anything for granted," said Warren.
"But Tarver is the kind of fight that Calzaghe needs if he wants to go down as being one of the best of all time."
