i know of one band that the members that play cant be from this planet. their lyrics and music is so out there that they have to get their material from another dimension. check out YES. they sing about some reaallly deep things. trust me. even the guy that does the artwork for the album covers say that the places he draws are actual places on other worlds.

Im not really into the slipnot, cradle of filth style but each to there own. Ministry are good and Soulfly, i'm liking Lamb of God too at the moment and God Forbid. The best out there Metal though has to be TOOL by a mile!!

Ministry has blown me away all 3 times I saw them live. Great f-in band!

We're talking about horror rock here, right? Not just good metal bands in general...I always thought "horror rock" was a type of music similar to The Misfits. You know, upbeat rock and roll/punk with sometimes goofy horror movie themes. Not some bands trying to be threatening and evil. More fun than threatening. I don't know...maybe the definition has changed today similar to the definition of "hardcore" music. Anyway, my favourite horror rock bands would have to be The Misfits (of course, huge Misfits fan) and Samhain. Also, psycobilly has a similar horror movie theme to it, so I have to include The Meteors in the list.

Meh ive seen only medicore bands at best so far here.

Imho the best metal bands are:

Opeth. They have incredible songs, no other bands fuses acoustic guitars with electric guitars like they do. Theire latest album is incredible musically. Its a mix of death metal with 70's rock/metal and jazz.

Death. Despite the gore suggesting name they havent made gory songs since theire 3d album. Very complex songs with some of the greatest solo's ever and riffs ever

Megadeth. They make thrash metal like metallica did in the old days just way better. Very good solo's and riffs.

Moonsorrow. They make Viking metal. That is black metal made folky. Theire latest album is incredibly complex. Not a band of the solo's though as the keyboards to that. I also saw them live and they are incredible live.

Isis. Athmospheric sludge metal. A very tense kind of music. There are no solo's here but the riffs are very good.

Just wanted to state that there are better bands than:
slipknot, cradle of filth and pantera.
