Tottenham: Spurs rubbish Defoe links

Tottenham have moved to deny reports that star striker Jermain Defoe could be sold to Manchester United before the transfer window closes.

Reports over the last couple of days suggested 21-year-old Defoe was on his way from White Hart Lane to Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson sought to bring in a new striker to bolster his attack before 31 August.

But a Spurs statement said: "At this point in time and being in a strong financial position, we have no intention of selling any of our top players.

"On the contrary, we are in the process of building a team for the future."
