Valencia defender Mauricio Pellegrino is in the process of ending his contract with the defending Spanish champions so he can join Liverpool.

The Argentinian began the season with an injury and has made just one appearance since returning to fitness and is now set to link up with former Valencia coach Rafael Benitez at Anfield after the club decided to allow him to leave on a free transfer.

Pellegrino's agent, Filippo Cavadini, arrived in the Spanish coastal city on Tuesday and said: "Liverpool's proposal arrived yesterday but we still have to bring to an end the player's contract at Valencia before we can start negotiating with Liverpool.

"It's a very good contract for a player who is 33 years old and Pellegrino is ready to go to Liverpool."

Liverpool have completed the signing of Argentine defender Mauricio Pellegrino. The South American becomes Rafa Benitez's first signing of the January transfer window after agreeing a deal until the end of the season.

Pellegrino will technically be on loan from Valencia, but his contract with Los Che is up in the summer and so will be free to move should he impress at Anfield over the coming months.

i think this will be a good move for him and the club, benitez knows everything about the player he needs to know. i think a few seasons ago, him and ayala where both valued very highly. with hugs asking prices.

i think he a giant of a defender, and getting him for free really, sounds really good busineess

At his age he's just cover for Carragher and Hyppia should one get injured, and at a free as you said it's good business really.

Liverpool have confirmed that Mauricio Pellegrino has left Anfield.

The Argentine stopper has been allowed to leave after failing to win a new deal.

Pellegrino arrived at Anfield during the January transfer window on a short-term deal from Valencia.

The 33-year-old made 12 appearances for The Reds, but he struggled to hold down a place in the side ahead of Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.

Not a good signing! Rafa has been a bit hit and miss with the players he brought in.
