Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer has insisted he will call it a day when his contract expires at the end of the season. The 34-year-old has never indicated that he would re-think his decision to retire despite new manager Graeme Souness' admission that he would try to persuade him to stay on if he was still scoring goals.

But, despite finding the back of the net 10 times this season before a thigh injury sidelined him for 12 games, Shearer is refusing to budge even though he is only 17 goals short of Jackie Milburn's club record 200-mark.

Alan Shearer has hinted that he could be persuaded to extend his glittering career beyond the boundaries of this season. The former England international proved his worth to Newcastle when netting their opener in the 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday, his first outing since November.

Shearer has maintained that he will bring down the curtain on his stellar career at the end of the season, but this has not stopped Magpies chief Graeme Souness from suggesting that he will attempt to persuade the striker to reconsider. Souness brought the subject back into the spotlight at the weekend when suggesting he will consider offering Shearer a role on his coaching team in order to persuade him to extend his playing career into next term.

After scoring against Saints, Shearer refused to rule out the possibility of playing on - admitting he will speak with Souness later this season.
