Portsmouth want to sign outspoken striker Craig Bellamy and are hoping to tempt Newcastle United with an option on Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
Bellamy is heading for the St James' Park exit door following his refusal to apologise to manager Graeme Souness after the pair's latest bust-up.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd revealed on Wednesday that there had been no serious offers for the Wales international, aside from a loan enquiry
from Championship club Stoke City. But that position has now altered after Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric confirmed he has asked to take Bellamy on
loan for the rest of the season.
Mandaric is willing to offer the pacey forward an escape route from Tyneside and is prepared to give Newcastle first option on Aiyegbeni as a
sweetener in the deal.
