BEROMUENSTER, Switzerland : Germany's former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, of the T-Mobile team, won the first stage of the Tour of Switzerland here.

Ullrich, the 1997 Tour winner who will be among Lance Armstrong's main challengers this July, outsprinted Swiss duo Oskar Camenzind and Fabian Jeker after a relatively flat 176 km ride between Sursee and here.

The Tour of Switzerland normally begins with a time trial prologue however organisers, for the first time since 1993, decided against including it.

Ulirch is the only racer i see that can top off armstrong and has been close in just about all the years that lance has won.
