Australians Samantha Stosur and third seed Alicia Molik advanced to the women's semi-finals, while countryman Lleyton Hewitt was victorious in a men's
quarter-final match in blistering heat at the Medibank International tournament on Thursday.
Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport was scheduled to play Stosur in the quarter-finals on Thursday, but withdrew from the tournament due to bronchitis.
Davenport, who also withdrew from the Hopman Cup with a knee injury on January 2, attempted to warm up before she was forced to forfeit the match.
Despite the illness, Davenport expects to play as the top seed at the Australian Open, which begins January 17.
