I suspected 1984 of actually happening when EVERYONE started getting computers. It's not that I don't like them, but it just gives off a bad vibe that pretty much every person in this country(as well as the government) is linked onto the same internet, which just makes it easier for Big Brother to check up on us.

What I don't understand is why people feel they are important enough to be followed around by government spies, having all your moves tracked.

I'm not saying that they ARE watching everything I do, I'm not stupid enough to believe that. I'm just saying that it's a little uncomfortable that should the government want to, they can find out anything at all about me or anyone else using the internet.

I understand your concern, but I think the situation is not radically different to 20 years ago, before PC's were in every home. The governments still kept tabs on people. Most of your personal information is stored on government computers on a network you don't have access to, anyway.

My wife works for our local government here (*looks around suspiciously*) and she can access almost any information about any person in the country within a few seconds. This is all done without the 'net.

However, I do agree that it adds another tool to the ones the government could use to track us, if we stood out as important enough to be watched.

I for one, am important enough to be tracked.

Well Duh!!! thank you! somebody actually sees this. I was talking to someone today about Florida suspending the constitutional ammendment and he asked me why it mattered, why I had to tell people. People don't find it a shock that Florida suspended the constitution. People don't find it horrid and scary that the government taps our phones, keeps track of what shows we watch, that any "free" individual can see an aerial view of my house from satellite off of mapquest, that we are getting pictures taken of our cars when they're not even sure they have the right car. The future is here and the technology and the politicians are making an Orwellian society come to live.

I completely agree with what you're saying. This country is really going to hell these days.

He may have just been 20 years off on the title of that book....I mean I agree with what outsidethemilkglass said. The world IS going down the toilet and there is nothing that can be done...freedom, Privacy individuality and real entertainment will disappear little by little until there is nothing left.

I hope that never happens...But the way things are going now...it's inevitable!

We are probubly tracked more demographically, than individually. Citizen sentiment is probubly much more important to know, than who joe shmo is calling on his cell phone.

you only have to look at any terrorist trial when they (Police ,Government agency)bring out cctv coverage and they have followed the terrorists, bank robbers etc right across a city of from start point to end .
There are so many cameras banks shopping centres traffic systems all can either be linked or accessed

just found out last month, that the company I work for is changing phone systems.

these new systems will tie in with our computers and at any given moment, the bosses can access our computer and telephone line, and we'll never know it.

They call it ... "clikc to coach" or something like that.

Many of us that are concerned over being under surveillance are doing something "illegal". ( including myself ) Perhaps we enjoy Sattiva in the evenning, or wish to consciously explore or even experiment with psycedelic drugs ( not party with them ), for sake of knowledge and personal growth and/or understanding of whether or not they ought to be used at all.

A lot of the money the Bush adminsistration recently advocated for for national defense ( $400 billion dollars ) may be used for surveillance of those who consciously use drugs.

A commercial in America by the Anti-drug institute recently equated the smoking of Sattiva or "Pot" ( god bless her ) to the support of terrorism.

"If you smoke pot you support the drug dealer who received it from a cartel who lined up a family and shot them one by one" the conclusion "if you smoke pot you support terrorism"

IN this Orwellian age I do feel that I may be under surveillance. Don't forget that your surveillance is stored in vaste computer archives that may accessed in some nightmare of a possible future

How can you speak in Newspeak, its harder then hell? BB was a genus with his idea for newspeak to limit the thought compassity of the people. I alway myself read the dictonary to prevent this newspeak theroy from becoming real.

I think the Patriot Act is good, we need a healthy dose of BB. We dont need an oppressive facist/commie gov. however. This kind of thing however must be constantly regulated. We shouldnt use the BB power on US Citizens as much as foreginers. Then focus most of that on Enemies of the West (ie Iran, NK, other terror/drug/commie/facist related countries/areas).

- terrorist : resistance fighter against the NWO or any country/organisation supported by them.

- tolerance : forcing others to admit that a certain way of life is just great, and persecuting them if they believe differently.

- two-party-system : one-party-system in disguise.

- war on drugs : prohibition of certain drugs used mostly for entertainment or mind-enhancing experiences.

- war on terrorism : eliminating anybody that dares to stand up against against NWO supremacy

- weapons of mass destruction : reference to advanced weapons... biological, chemical and nuclear...

The government being able to more easily monitor the activities of people due to the usage of advanced technology is a far cry from a government that is willing to use capital punishment against someone for having a relationship out of wedlock or for writing in a journal.

Call me naive, but I think that as a whole the U.S. government generally considers the best interest of the U.S. population to be a priority. Granted, there are surely ulterior motives for many actions our government makes, and I'm sure we don't hear about everything that goes on...but that doesn't mean that a mustachioed despot calling himself Big Brother is waiting right around the corner.

I considered the distopian society in 1984 to be more of a satirical look at the way the 20th century was progressing than some kind of accurate warning of what would happen if people didn't change. If people look hard enough, you will always be able to see different aspects of the book in real life, that's the point of a satire...to take real events/situations and distort them such that they remain realistic while being amplified such that people more easily see the irony involved.

I'd be willing to bet that the government/society in this country will be much the same in 50 years as it is now, and as it was 50 years ago.

The whole concept of Newspeak is present any time a contraction is used in language, any time two words are pushed together. It is in part self inflicted - Some one does it and it is accepted, it then becomes common place.

As far as them watching us, any decent book on marketing can take your income, your gender, and your age, with a few other factors and tell you what color your underware is, and how you hang your toilet paper. Which leaves them the option of looking for those in the sample who don't do things that particular way to watch.

Of cource this may sound paranoid, however I have been followed by them, watched by them, (reasonably isolated area where strangers would stick out), and had my phone tapped by them. (Before technology became as sophisticated as it is today - I used to blow their taps off of my phone lines with a transformer and a set of clips - now days they don't need to trip your tap detector). I can however say that they never interfeared with me or harassed me in "Other" ways - it was strictly gathering inteligence, some times I would play with them - Being very predictable to the point of mind numbing monotony, and other times I would scr** with them, loosen their tire valves, have the Pizza guy bring them a Pizza - stuff like that. I haven't seen them in a LONG time - maybe they gave up - probably not.

On some levels it was fun, cuz I did get access into some places that I would not have been able to other wise (it was like someone called ahead and said let him in and see what he does).

The bit about Florida suspending the constitution... - Does that suprise any one? look at who is running the place. I've been waiting for them to change the flag to the NAZI flag. (Bust them, try them, imprision them - Don't matter if they did anything or not - don't belive me, come and see for yourself).

I surely don't belive that the Govt. does anything for our benefit.
It treats us like children, Uses Scare tactics to keep us in line, and rapes us of our rights under the "Patriot Act". They are the traitors to this country! They belive we are nothing but cattle, to be ruled, fleased, and sold.
(I'm waiting for the revolution to begin)
