We named our country the USA before Alaska because it's on the continent of North AMerica. We call ourselves Americans today because we have the right to.

In some countries (e.g. Mexico) it is taught that there are 5 Continents! America (consisting of North & South America) being one of them.

Really, what difference does it make. I think that the only reason we are called Americans is tradition. The USA was the first europeanized country in the New World to govern itself, so that was most likely the start of that particular tradition.

If we are talking about continents well, yes, there are several that have the name America in them.

Saying that Alaska does not count because the ancient settlers were Russian is also incorrect. The people that crossed the Alaska land bridge a couple of hundred thousand years ago, were in fact almost Chinese in origin. They came from a region somewhere near the northeast tip of Siberia that is today bordered by modern day China.

Having crossed the land bridge, they slowly colonised Northern then Central and finaly the Southern areas of what we now know as America.

They became the Red Indian Nations which the British [who later became Americans] so successfully slaughtered. (Brief natural history lesson ova ]

If we are talking about countries, what about us here in the Dis-United Kingdom? Why don't you include us as Americans?

Hawaii is part of the United States of America, but it's not included when referring to the continental US I don't think.
