The day after Bush conceded for the first time that the US may have reached the equivalent of the Tet offensive the Pentagon has admitted defeat in its effort to secure Baghdad. This admission comes during one of the deadliest months for American troops since the invasion three and a half years ago with 73 killed since the 1st of October.

I'm sorry, but nowhere in the article did it state that the "Pentagon has admitted defeat". I do see, however, that some are trying to interpret it that way.

What I do see is a General saying that the results so far have been disheartening, and that they will go back to the drawing board. Good move, imo.

This article has been misinterpreted in much the same way that Bush's remarks about the Tet offensive were.

The crackdown was being called the "Battle for Baghdad" in the media and a military spokesperson is now saying that the crackdown is a failure...i.e. the "Battle for Baghdad" is a failure. THAT is what justifies the title for this thread.
