Israel has hit a UN peace keeping post on the Israeli/Lebanese border according to the UN troops stationed within it. The Israeli Defence Force said that it was a Hezbollah rocket that struck the UN observation post. But that was refuted by the UN troops who said it was an Israeli mortar. Israel continues to bombard Lebanon with airstrikes and shelling.

BEIRUT, Lebanon - A U.N.-run observation post near the border took a direct hit Friday during fighting between
Israel and Hezbollah militants. Israel resumed airstrikes on Lebanon and prepared for a possible ground invasion, warning people in the south to flee.

[...]

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said Hezbollah rockets hit the U.N. post near Zarit, just inside Israel, but a U.N. officer said it was an artillery shell fired by the Israeli Defense Force. The facility was severely damaged, but nobody was injured as the Ghanian troops manning the post were inside bomb shelters at the time of the strike, the U.N. official said.

Who's telling the truth? Was it Hezbollah or Israel that hit the UN observation post?

Well for starters the UN troops themselves say it was a mortar coming from Israel that hit them. Secondly the Israelis have attacked, and killed, UN troops inside Lebanon before.

A French member of a UN patrol has been killed in an Israeli air raid in south Lebanon after a roadside bomb killed an Israeli officer and wounded three soldiers in a disputed area on the Lebanese frontier.

The UN patrol was hit by Israeli fire near the Shebaa Farms area on Sunday, Lebanese police said. A Swedish UN peacekeeper and a Lebanese driver were also injured, police said.

UN Observer, Israeli Officer killed

Israel also killed three Nigerian UNFIL troops when they shelled their UN position in March 16th 1981.

Israel today surrounded a UN observation post. It seems that there is a concerted effort on Israel's part to isolate the UN. If Israel wanted to carry out another Sabra and Shatila style massacre they would need to keep prying international eyes out. Seeing as though the UNFIL forces are the only non-Israel, non-Hezbollah presence in the area south of the Litani river it would be prudent of Israel to make sure they didnt see something that could incriminate Israel.

AVIVIM, Israel -- Some 10 Israeli armored vehicles on Saturday crushed a border fence and entered Lebanon, surrounding a UN observation post, an AFP correspondent reported.

Armored personnel carriers and bulldozers crossed the border at Avivim, around 35 kilometers (23 miles) from the Mediterranean coast, and surrounded an observation post of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

"This is only a pinpoint operation," said army spokesman Jacob Dalal.

Come to think of it, "bulldozers" - I think we have another Jenin about to occur today

i think i know why they did it: UNFIL's role as intelligence gathering tool of Hezbollah.

strange how such issues are 'resolved' through violence rather than raking the UN over the coals for siding with an involved party, isn't it? politricks is a dirty business ineed.

That is good point Long. It will indeed be unforchant if the UN people are giveing up nutrality. That could hurt the UN very much in the future.
