yea, the death toll was rising at the time of the writing of the article so I knew the count would be lower than the actual number, one witness said that the ocean receded 1500 feet before coming back in.

Would this affect the east coast? I'll do without the smileys because this is serious.

Thanks dg, with all that is happening right now, the world has an uneasy feeling about the near future it seems that roughly about every three months some new disaster is unfolding somewhere, it's really very disconcerting to those of us that watch the news regularly

Channelnewsasia.com: At least 105 dead as Indonesia's tsunami nightmare returns

18 July 2006

Putu Suryawan, an official at the Indonesian Red Cross disaster centre in the capital Jakarta, told AFP by telephone that as of 3:45 am on Tuesday (2045 GMT Monday), 105 people were confirmed dead and 127 others were reported missing. "This is a preliminary report. There is still a possibility for the figures to change," he told AFP. "This is still the early stages of the disaster." The dead were residents of West Java, Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, Suryawan said.

Two Swedish children aged between five and 10 years old, along with four Dutch tourists, were reported missing in Pangandaran after the tsunami, officials in Sweden and the Netherlands said.

Wow! How much can these poor folks take? I feel for them and especially, hope the death toll isn't nearly as high as the media is reporting.

Are these a prelimunary to something bigger, much bigger? Something along the lines of Krakatoa? That's alot of tsunami in the last two years. Maybe just coincidence?

Now the count is higher...262 dead and 160 missing.
I am afraid it will be worse as the authorities are able to search more and more of the areas affected.

A tsunami crashed into beach resorts and fishing villages on Java island Monday, killing at least 262 people and leaving more than 160 missing after bulletins failed to reach the region because no warning system was in place.

thanks Muaddib, those numbers are cause for alarm because they seem higher than normal and given the area it certainly could be a pre-cursor to a bigger event.

The news keep getting worse and worse, the death toll now is 520...

The death toll in the Indonesian tsunami has risen to at least 520, fuelling questions over why no warning was given ahead of the disaster.

Government officials said they received a warning that the island of Java was threatened by a tsunami following an underwater earthquake off the coast.
