Are Force Fields/Energy Shields viable? What would be the basic principles in creating something like this? Do we have the technology?

It depends on what kind of object energy you wanted it to deflect. From what I have seen cold plasma encased in a magnetic field could be so thick it could potentially block bullets or other objects. We are a few years away from this but we have made strids towards plasma sheilds and other types of force feild technologies.

Did a google search on plasma shields and came up with this.

Plasma shield, cloaking device

Cold plasma I believe will be the next revolutionary breakthrough in military hardware. You could make a plane invisble to radar, electro-magnetic sensors and to the naked eye
And if all that fails and you end up in a laser fight no worries. Shields up Mr. Sulu

Do you think we(govt. or whatnot) are in possesion of such tech. atm?

hmmm... The British armored divisions have developed an electro- magnetic armor which works in a similar way to a forcefield.

In part to combat the threats of handheld anti-tank weapons, as well as to investigate ways of maintaining protection levels while reducing weight, the US and UK are investigating a series of advanced armour technologies.
One technology under development is electro-magnetic armour. Used to defeat shaped charge warheads, the armour uses a massive magnetic charge to break apart and disperse shaped charge jets.

Here's a pretty cool video demonstrating Israels "Trophy" defence system, which indeed acts a a kind of invisible force feild around the vehicle.

The Trophy active protection system creates a hemispheric protected zone around the vehicle where incoming threats are intercepted and defeated. It has three elements providing -- Threat Detection and Tracking, Launching and Intercept functions. The Threat Detection and Warning subsystem consists of several sensors, including flat-panel radars, placed at strategic locations around the protected vehicle, to provide full hemispherical coverage. Once an incoming threat is detected identified and verified, the Countermeasure Assembly is opened, the countermeasure device is positioned in the direction where it can effectively intercept the threat. Then, it is launched automatically into a ballistic trajectory to intercept the incoming threat at a relatively long distance
