Apparently for the first time since the fall of the Shah, the United States and Iran will conduct state-level talks. The topic being the situation in Iraq.

Khameni backs talks with US on Iraq

This "thaw" in relations suggests war between the US and Iran is far from imminent. The US has probably realised what massive consequences for itself and its allies an attack on Iran would have as Peak Oil begins to grind its will.

I guess any move to help promote the more moderate elements of the Iranian polity cannot be a bad thing... you would be hard pressed to find too many people in the US administration to say that this means ruling out any military eventuality though... even though we all know war really is out of the question (the US just can't afford it... in neither economic or political capital)...
