coming from the middle of nowhere:
The US navy had a 16 billion dollar array of microphones situated underwater around most of the worlds oceans after WWII (called SOSAS)... They can identify every sound they hear except:
an unusual mechanical/technological repeating sound emiting from a place exactly between chile (a hotspot) and New Zealand (another hotspot). It is coming from a place over 1000 miles from any island. Its closest island neighbor is Easter Island (another unusual place).

Dr Chris Fox is the head researcher at the Pacific Marine Environmental laboratories. He stated that they can hear identifiable environmental sounds anywhere on the globe accurately. The only one they can't figure out is this unusual one.
This project was only turned over to this agency in 1991, so it might have been emiting this noise for a lot longer... Only the navy knows... This was on a Discovery program today. They played the sound and i would have to say that it sounds like a cross of a casio keyboard and some sci fi sound effect... In a repeating pattern... I am looking for an audio file link on this, but not having luck yet...

Many of the alien conspiracies talk of a secret undersea base that was traded for some technology...
A navy friend once saw a ufo dive into the water just a few thousand feet from his ship...the officer in charge told him and several others on duty that they didn't see anything...
I just talked to him and he confirmed that he was in the south pacific at the time.

anyone out there have any other ideas what might cause a consistant manufactured noise 1000 miles from anywhere? One that our government acknowledges exists (at least on the bottom levels) but can't identify...

the term is SOSUS..
i just did a thorough search of the website...
they have several wav files of unknown sounds that were temporary anomolys but not "the one" that was repeating...
It is also unusual that the only mention of this reacurring noise was on the television program... ("Science of the Deep" produced in 2002).

Do you have a web site to the .wav files that we would be able to listen to?

ok wouldnt you pick the bottom of the ocean if you were an alien, i mean that is the perfect place to hide, expecially since they know the humans cannot get to that deep of the ocean, that makes alot of sense, why not have a base under water and launch recon missions from there. short flight time, (not that, that would matter, from all the shows and news ufo's are so damn fast).

The area you mention is also very near a midocean spreading ridge. Although I dont claim that this is deffinitely the source of this noise, midocean ridges are known to emit rather regular (as regular as they get) seismic impulses.

LazarusTheLong,

Yes I also watched this program a few years or more ago and it really sounded mechanical to me.

Strange thing is I never heard a "word" about this ever again , until I just came across this thread.

I've wondered all this time what that sound was.

Still wondering...

LTL , have you ever heard anything about this since writing this thread?

If i told ya what is was i would have to kill you.

Anywho there is something down there as to who and what well that's the real mystery. I can only guess as to what it might be. Maybe it is the civilization of an underwater species of terrestrial intellegence not unlike our own?

Doesn't have to be ET as so many would jump to conclusions quickly. A species of aquatic people not unlike us.

Downed satellite maybe? From a failed launch? Probably more plausible than the leap to ET base...

unidentified sounds on SOSUS

is the new link to unidentified sounds (there are at least 6 now)
I am thinking that some of the news article was hype, but there is something down there...

A possibility is a satellite, but wouldn't a satellite be crushed at these extreme depths, as they are made for high vaccum, not high pressure.
Also, according to that article, the sound is much louder than organic sources (even whales), so i wonder what noises a satellite would make, and why they would be so loud (in space, no one can hear you scream) ? Unless it is a locater sound, used for retreval... which makes some sense, but couldn't they have dragged it up by now?

IMO, we need to check it out... could be the remnants of Atlantis

Those are some strange sounds, but at real-time speed we probably could even hear it. The frequency would be too low for us to hear.

One thing I would like to know is if there were any storms or hurricanes nearby when these were recorded. They could cause some underwater currents flowing around rocks or caverns on the ocean floor that may be causing these sounds.

From what was said in the article it reminds me of the movie Hunt for Red October, when the computer identified the caterpillar propulsion as "magma displacement".

Hummm.
it has been a few years, but when i first studied that sound, it was a totally different sound than the one that is on the website now...

there was much more intonation
the only thing i can think besides coverup, is that maybe the recording I heard was at a different speed... (the one they post now is 16times faster)

but they sounded very different before... much more noises...

I doubt their is a structure that big there it has to be smaller or they would have picked it up on geo surveys by now. no this is something else...no underwater vessel could with stand those pressures.

Perhaps it is one of the many things which have crashed. Or maybe it is under the ground.

I've not actually listend to the files yet (will do shortly), but, you think the one you heard originally was slower? I can attempt adjust it (I'm a DJ), if it's just a case of slowing it down then I wont accidently change anything else about it.

Yes ! I'm glad you also recognised that and I didn't even say anything about it yet.

The Audio is sped up. When it was Aired Real Time on the original show , it was distinctly mechanical sounding and strange.

So much so that I do not even recognise the presented "Spedup" version as being similar at all to the original.

What program was it on? you might be able to find it online so we know what show to watch.

This could most definitly open a new area to investigate in ufology.

Thanks for the links btw, I would love to hear the original stuff you heard.
