A kitten was born in Oregon. While that is not newsworthy in itself, the fact that it was born with one eye and no nose is. After much speculation and scrutiny, the photos were delcared authentic. Doctors have a name for the condition. It is called "Holoprosencephaly". The kitten was fed thru a syringe untill it died the next day. Some doubt was cast since the eye was open. After submitting the memory card from her digital camera, the investigator said "Fabricating those images in sequence and in the camera's original picture format would be virtually impossible".

A photo of a one-eyed kitten named Cy drew more than a little scepticism when it turned up on various websites, but medical authorities have a name for the bizarre condition.

"Holoprosencephaly" causes facial deformities, according to the US National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute's Web site.

How bizarre and sad. While I have never heard of this, the fact that the medical community has a name for it, shows it must be more common than people think. Apparently it was the only one of the litter born that way. It is unknown whether any kittens born this way have lived to become adults.
