A glossary of terms used on ATS.

Welcome to ATS.

Here is a short glossary of terms used on the internet. If you see some ‘funny’ words and acronyms on the web site you should be able to figure out what it means from this thread.


Blog- A blog is basicly an online journal. Many people use blogs including celeberties and news reporters.

BTW- By The Way.

Caps- Typing all in capitol letters.

FAQ- Frequently Asked Questions.

Flame- To Flame some one or Flaming, is to send nasty or insulting messages.

GIF- Graphic Interchange Format. A common image file.

IMHO- In My Humble Opinion or sometimes IMO- In My Opinion.

JPEG- Joint Photographic Experts Group. A common image file.

LOL- Laughs Out Loud. Sometimes ROTFL is used, Roll On The Floor Laughing.

OMG- Oh My God

PODcast- A PODcast is a audio broadcast over the internet. It is usually associated with apples portable music player, the iPOD. You do not need a iPOD to listen to PODcast.

Spam- In the real world Spam is unwanted meat that comes from a can. On the internet Spam is unwanted advertisements that come from a man.

Sock Puppet- A second member account that is used by the same person. This is sometimes used as a way to create the illusion of support in an argument.

Troll- a troll is a person who posts for the purpose of disruption. Trolls feed on other peoples frustrations. Do not feed the trolls.

That's amusing, I'd always read it as oh my gosh...

In addition to Umbrax's examples, there are more terms and acronyms that are used in many blogs and discussion boards that are not permitted here, though. Abbreviations of swears (wts = what the swear), editing out one of the letters in a sw*ar, $\/\/34®1|\|9 1|\| £337 is also unacceptable.

Just remember, there are several moderators here, and they can't all be dumb. If you're trying to break the Terms and Conditions in some new and creative way, chances are someone's going to catch on.

OBL= Osama Bin Laden
ALQ= Al Quiada

DUBYA = President W. Bush

FTL= Faster Then Lightspeed

AOA= Angle of Attack

FOIA= Freedom of Information Act

OPS= Operations usualy "black"

I am sure there are many more

Oh yeah, just used the term in a U2U and thought to post it here, too

A lurker is someone who reads through threads, but doesn't make any posts of their own. That's not a bad thing, by the way; if you don't have anything to contribute to the thread other than to say "good point" or "idiot" (which is against the T&C, by the way, as you'd be insulting a member) just send it to the person via U2U.

That's in the mCENTER, by the way (BTW).

How about a few more basics ones?

ATS = AboveTopSecret

BTS = BelowTopSecret

PTS = Politics@AboveTopSecret

WATS = Way Above Top Secret (a monthly award given)

ATSnn = AboveTopSecret New Network

RATS = Really Above Top Secret (a hidden from search-engines forum that requires "purchase" in the ATS store)

LMBO-sorry but that really struck me funny.

(oh and LMBO=Laughing My Butt Off...we can say *that* right?)

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly

AFAIK = As Far As I Know (this one is all mine)

n00b = Newbie, usually used as an insult, term is not often encountered on ATS, more of a game term.

This is sometimes jokingly referred to as "TWATS"

The Way Above Top Secret award...... as opposed to any other meaning of this word, hehe....

Others:

UFO - Unidentified Flying Object
IFO - Identified Flying Object
USO - Unidentified Submerged Object
OOPART - Out of Place (or out of time) Artifact (like a bullet in a Mammoth skull)
CRYPTID - Creature whose existence is only speculated (such as Bigfoot, Lochness Monster, etc. or is thought to be extinct, but is sighted).
NWO - New World Order
PNAC - Project for a New American Century (I think this is it)
DIA - Lesser known branch of Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency
NSA - National Security Agency (jokingly.....No Such Agency)
ARMY - Aint Ready for Marines Yet
NAVY - Need Another Virgin Yeoman?
MARINES - My Ass Rides In Naval Equipment Sir!
AIR FORCE - Aint I Ready to Fly Over Real Combat Engagements?
ID10T Error - Just look at it closer... You got yourself an Eye-Dee-Ten-Tee Error....("IDIOT")
