A forum image macro is generally a humerous image with a humerous message attached to it.

Sometimes they are just humerous and lighthearted, sometimes they can be scathing. (One of the cruder examples was posted when someone posted a broken link to an image: A picture of Ray Charles with the words "I CAN'T SEE S**T" underneath it.) One of the more unusual current ones is the ORLY?/YARLY meme.

The school of thought I've followed is that the macro shouldn't be spammed, offensive or NSFW, be specific, and not be of a huge file size, and generally not used as the only thing in a post.

I would imagine if the Terms And Conditions Of Use are followed and the Image Size Guidelines are followed there should be no problem.

Also just a question, is this what a "forum image macros" is? The Fake News

I'm sure the only code that SkepticOverlord allows in the threads is BB code
where as macros uses a written code I think it would not be allowed but I'm not sure.
A Super Mod could answer your question much better than my simple opinion.

What is a macro and why write one?

I don't think the example quoted above would be acceptable and would likely get the author in "hot water" as there is profanity or implied profanity text on the image. Personally I would consider the STFU saying in the same way as it's rude and inappropriate on ATS.
