Jack Thompson, famous video-game alarmist, is in the process of not only attempting to press criminal charges against a webcomic, but now has been cast out of the National Institute on Media and the Family. He has made a number of vague legal threats against the NIMF. In addition, after issuing a challenge to the gaming community, he has now backed out of paying ten thousand dollars to charity.

Perhaps you read the letter from the National Institute on Media and the Family in which they distance themselves from Jack Thompson. Well Jack has responded to that letter with two letters of his own. He makes some vague legal threats which I have come to discover are sort of his bread and butter. You also get the impression after reading his letters that he believes he was cut loose simply because he is too “hardkore”.

I think we can all agree that young kids should not play violent videogames. I think we can also agree that they should not watch violent movies or read pornographic magazines. That’s a job for parents not Jack Thompson...

You know what, Jack? We're going to be the men you're not. You said that your insulting, illusory ten thousand dollars would go to the charity of Paul Eibeler's choice. We've got a good guess that he'd direct your nonexistant largesse toward The Entertainment Software Association Foundation, a body that has raised over six point seven million dollars over the last eight years. We've just made the donation you never would, and never meant to. Ten thousand dollars' worth. And we made it in your name.

Well, this certainly shows how low we can go. Penny Arcade is an institution in the gaming world, and now its authors are stepping up and donating ten thousand dollars of their own money to charity, after suffering a number of attacks by Mr. Thompson.

Just another sickening display of the litigitous nature of the anti-game lobby.

Words can't even express how much I hate Jack Thompson. I don't think anyone likes him except for naive Mothers who are afraid of their children playing games where you can see nudity even though they can turn on the news and see violence.

Mr. Thompson embodies all the worst qualities of alarmist lobbies in American history. His witchunting, puritanical views do little to improve the actual quality of games released, instead focusing more on the content.

Unbelievable.

He actually calls GTA a 'cop-killing sim'.

Exactly. He's a manipulator. "They paint bulls eyes on your back and your officers".
Cop-killing sim, haha what a joke. I've never had an urge to kill a Police officer and I've played VC and SA heaps. I don't know how someone can train to kill someone using GTA either, it's not even 1st person.

This man is a complete nut. Anyone who has researched his history should know this. Just how insecure is this man anyways that he feels a need to go after the creators of a webcomic because they made him look bad.

He is nothing more then a joke who seemingly goes out of his way to make himself look like a moron.

Sweet!

I keep getting voted 'no' for some reason. Somehow, this isn't as important as links to hobbits.

Yeah, it's only free speech.

ANYWAYS, I figured I should link to these famous shirts of which Jack speaks.

www.thinkgeek.com...

I can see how it's a bit of slander...but it's the truth. As a sea captain and pharoh, I DO hate Jack Thompson.

I voted Yes.
Can he get the t-shirt taken off the stores? There's t-shirts with George Bush's face on them and he doesn't seem to care.

Thats it, if I can't buy one I'm making my own "I hate Jack Thompson" T-shirt.

Honestly, this guy is such a pain in the neck. How on earth do you train to kill police officers using GTA? It's not first person, it allows you to survive a storm of bullets, and even has lock-on! All of the things I don't like about that game are coincidently what makes this a bad "simulator".

For one thing, kids don't just go out and kill police officers because they played a game that wasn't all fuzzy and friendly. And of course, even if somebody tried to kill a police officer by using stuff they learned from GTA would die in the process. A GTA trained loser stands no chance against some of the nation's finest.

Jack Thompson really needs to get a life, and maybe he should try playing a few video games for once.

I implore you to not fall for the semantic outline that Mr. Thompson presents.

By even IMAGINING that video games can be used as "training tools" for violence is conceding an outrageous notion.

The only direct physiological result of playing action-based video games over a period of time is the attainment of improved coordinated hand/eye reflex actions.

With regard to "violent" video games, negative psychological implications are unproven, but are negligent at best. Mr. Thompson's opinion that video games cause violent atrocities is elementary and ridiculous. This opinion simply sells mankind short.

I keep getting 'no' votes, somehow. Damn hippies.

Anyways, ol' Jack was on CNN last night, making comments like "The NFL wouldn't allow it's name to be used, so that tells you something."

Of course, the venerable Madden series DOES use the NFL name. EA has purchased rights to do so. Obviously, this man is smoking the crack, and is still allowed on a major news network as a credible source.

Donde estad justice, American network TV?
