Seems to me most NATO designations of Soviet/RF aircraft is based around begins with F for fighter; Flanker, Fishbed, Flogger. B for bomber, Bear,
Badger, Blackjack, C for cargo or transport, Candid etc, H for helos, Havoc, Hind. It's not the most sophisticated system but it has a rationale.
As such, Platypus might be a translation for the Russian name for the SU-32/34, but as has been pointed out, it's not likely to be the NATO
designation for it.
