Up north, they have gates that open and shut in order to shut down the highways during snow storms and ice overs. I think we may here that it takes time to put out all the pilons to create a contra-flow situation.

Just shut the gates. Post up a cop at each intersection. Or a fireman. Or a soldier. Someone from the media. A volunteer?

Freaking duh!

Put the gates up and when we need contra flow, shut the gates. Traffic that needs to go into the danger zone can use the feeder. With a police escort if need be.

Tow trucks and fuel trucks should be given emergency lights to be used ONLY in a local emergency. Now, a freeway car crash isnt an emrgency but a hurricane or terrorist attack certainly is.

The military caravans need to stop driving 25mph, put on some green and brown flashing lights and FREAKING GET THERE!

Pearl Harbor, 911, and the last two major hurricanes were good drills to have. Now if we would just learn from them and do good at one.

Instead of forming a special interest committee to investigate all the short falls, they should just select random people from the phone book or voters lists or from the social security number lists. Just grab some average Joe's and dont let any over educated professional tunnel vision idiot on board.

It'll never happen. If the terrorists set off WMD near you, just shoot yourself in the head and let the tunnel vision idiots sort it out.

contraflow is a LIE. its a fantasy! something they tell you they will do to lure you out and make you leave. in all my 17 hours of being in the car during katrina evac. all i heard was "contraflow this and contraflow that" where was the fricking contraflow! it sure as hell wasnt there when I left.

17 hours to get to a little town an hour outside of houston. bumper-to-bumper the WHOLE WAY. i've never had a more frustrating experience in my life. trying to sleep with my head smushed up against a hard plastic ice chest. being forced to listen to bad music and 'doom and gloom' predictions.
and that isnt the worst of it, no not at all. many many people had their evac. experience FAR worse than mine. i cannot even imagine.

at first it was a very solemn thing, we were all very serious. then it was just like *U*K this. im too damn tired to be solemn.

then being stuck in a little hick town in TX for a month didnt help either...

sorry, i got off on a rant there, but my point was that yes, it is impossible to evacuate a major US city. i though it was hell here, i cant even fathom what the poor folks in houston had to go through.
