KCBS) - An explosion shook office buildings near Post and Kearny streets in downtown San Francisco shortly before ten o'clock Friday morning.
San Francisco fire department captain Pete Howes told KCBS a man hole cover in front of the Ralph Lauren store at the corner of Post and Kearny appeared to have exploded, although the exact cause of the blast is under investigation.

"We found the front of the Crocker Galleria on that corner had been singed," Howes said. "We've locked the area down."

One person has been taken to the hospital, said Howes. The extent of the person's injuries were not known.

"A big fire ball shot out the side of the Polo store," said James Brown, who saw the explosion. "There were four or five people walking by right when the flames came out and covered them."

dont know if dis was an accident or intentional. pretty good idea for terrorists to go under the sewers and plant explosives on a big building though. its probably gas leak or sombody light a match in the sewers to see where he or she is goin (but thats only if he or she lost a flashlight).

btw, hope the person is not critically injured as well.

Firefighters and police evacuated several blocks around the store in the Crocker Galleria area, said fire spokesman Peter Howes.

A witness told KCBS radio that a woman was engulfed in flames from the blast which shattered the Ralph Lauren store's windows just before 10 a.m. Another witness said the blast seemed to have originated under the sidewalk.

A manhole cover was blown out of place and landed across the street.

The fire department said one person was injured in the blast.

Witnesses described a powerful explosion and said there is a great deal of debris in the street. Nearby buildings were evacuated, including the Galleria, and hundreds of people were milling around the street. Streets in the area have been blocked off.

Witnesses say they saw fire on the awning of the Ralph Lauren store, in front of the manhole. The glass storefront was completely destroyed.

Evacuations have been called at the Charles Schwab building and at the Banana Republic store.

Ralph Lauren and the Banana Republic store?
When will the carnage end? It's got to be the work of Old Navy and JC Penny combined. They are deliberately attacking the yuppies in hopes to scare people to their chain stores away from the fashionable fine-fabric stores.

Just to inform you SIR, there is a time and place for pointing fingers at those people and for good reason...

You don't just go around accusing those people of current event happenings, what they did in the past has tarnished their reputation whether you want to believe it or not.. I know... not, they are stand up guys right? No paper trail ever lead to anywhere more then a few times, and it didn't happen because the media didn't report it, right??

You do know that by law media doesn't have to tell the truth right? They don't have to report bigger incriminating stories against our elected if they don't want to... But remember that just because the media doesn't report it doesn't mean these paper trails don't exist...

It looks as if this was an electrical fire. Nothing more. Still I think that everyone thought the worst when it first happened. People are still on edge since 9-11 and will probably continue to be for quite some time.

All signs point to the explosion being electrical-related, he said
