Opening his election campaign German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder has attacked President Bush's threat that military action against Iran could take
place. The Chancellor declared that such action had failed before and would do so again, in a theme highyl reminicsent of his anti war platform three
years ago, when he strongly criticised the Iraq war.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has warned the US to back away from the possibility of military action against Iran over its nuclear
programme.
His comments come a day after President Bush reiterated that force remained an option but only as a last resort.
Iran has resumed what it says is a civilian nuclear research programme but which the West fears could be used to develop nuclear arms.

While this may be popular with the German electorate I feel that Schroder has made a mistake by attacking Bush so openly, undermining the unity that
the west needs in its attempts to force Iran to disarm.
While I agree that the use of force is a bad idea it should not be dismissed entirely since in the end it may be all that Iran will listen to.
