DENVER -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado today released new documents that it says confirm that the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) is inappropriately treating people who engage in peaceful protest as potential terrorists.

The ACLU obtained the documents in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed last December on behalf of 16 organizations and ten individuals. The files released today contain information on the Colorado American Indian Movement and the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center.

"These documents underscore the ACLU's concern that the JTTF inappropriately regards public protest as potential 'domestic terrorism,' and investigates and builds files on the political activities of peaceful dissenters because of the mere possibility that their activities will attract participants who may violate the law," said Mark Silverstein, ACLU of Colorado Legal Director. "By casting its net so unjustifiably wide, the FBI wastes taxpayers' money and threatens to chill legitimate dissent."

Silverstein said that the new files show that JTTF agents opened "domestic terrorism" investigations after they read notices on Web sites announcing an antiwar protest in Colorado Springs in 2003 and a protest against Columbus Day in Denver in 2002. They also reveal that the JTTF monitored the peaceful protest activities of law-abiding groups that formed the Coalition to Stop Vail Expansion in the late 1990s and that it investigated the Boulder-based Activist Media Project for videotaping a Lockheed Martin facility from a public street.

Wonderful.

So I guess ANYBODY that is Against the War and Expresses His or Hers Opinion in a way of Peaceful Protesting is Today a "Potential Terrorist"?

I once thought United States of America was a Great Country because of all the Liberties and the Freedom of Expression and the Freedom of Speech.

But Apparently the Democracy is not in Control anymore.

Forget Your Rights

Forget Your Liberties.

Forget the Republic - Welcome to the Empire, where what WE say is Right and if you are LEFT, you are under Arrest!

Oh yeah like the ACLU is a nonbiased resource...NOT!

Please, just looking into these groups as a potential source of domestic terror is no problem.

More ACLU attempts to destroy America.
What a joke.
The ACLU needs to find its way back to its originally intended purpose and program. They have simply gone to the dogs these past few years.

It kills me all the posters here who say "as long as your not doing anything illegal, you've got nothing to worry about."

And as far as the ACLU crack...listen up kiddie...they might do things that are unpopular but they fight for individual rights guaranteed under the constitution and bill of rights. So go LEARN something before you start typing your crap. Learn about the unions workers who were beaten and killed by police/corporations before the ACLU and similar orgs got involved. LEARN about the civil rights workers who were beaten and killed without justice until the ACLU (free of charge) got on their side and changed laws.
If you ever had a backbone to stand up against authority, to help people pushed around in this country you would want the ACLU behind you.

The increasing ignorance on this website is staggering.

Exactly. The ACLU has basically become a terrorist organization itself bent on destroying the very fabric of American life. They want destroy the Boy Scouts, communities' rights to celebrate Christmas, and now endanger our very lives by granting more rights to terrorists than to our own citizens. They may have served a purpose at one time, but have since gone way overboard and have become a deplorable organization which all Americans should shun and protest against.

Why when people are confronted with facts and the truth they turn into ignorance to defend their views even when in the process they are actually advocating for control and more violations of human rights against their fellow American.

Patriotism can render many blind and deaf to what our government is doing.

But as anything let’s thank groups that still advocate for civil liberties and the protection of American way of life.

Marg and Souljah, brother and sister in arms that you both apparently are, take heed of this:
Congress asked to probe ACLU: Accused of 'widespread use of frivolous lawsuits'

You both can add this topic to that list of frivolous lawsuits, k?

Btw, read these and enjoy, kk?

'These past few years' is when they've really been needed to fight against the obvious stomping of civil rights that is going on all over the country. They're making noise against the suppression of our rights. Naturally, you think they need to be reigned in.

I gotta say, I'm almost looking forward to the time when some of you guys get YOUR rights stomped on and see what you think then. I'm not normally a vindictive person, but I just don't get this attitude.

Three people with an Anti-war bumper sticker get dragged out of a Bush rally. For a bumper sticker? For exercising free speech? We need the ACLU more than ever!

This is the goal of the New World Order, people! They feed off emotion...namely anger and fear which dance quite well with each other. The whole goal is to turn your attention away from the leaders and their crimes. Do you ever wonder why no big wigs like Kissinger, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Blair, Greenspan, are the targets of the terrorist attacks? Sure a small Leutinent, or Governor puppet of one of the third world nations(Iraq, Columbia,Afghanistan etc get hit but never the big wigs. Why is that? Please dont tell me they have the worlds greatest security detail when some of you say 19 arab highjackers flew 4 commercial airlines for more than an hour with no intercept from one of the most mightiest and technologically advanced militarys on the planet
They could do it if they wanted but they dont,,,why? Because they (the terrorists) are basically hitmen for the big wigs to push their agendas.

Come on,,,a 4 year old can figure it out.

Pride especially false pride can be deadly....your not a God fearing, patriotic American because you have a stupid ribbon on your car or you wave a USA flag made in China.

Wake up folks...its getting down to the wire.

Does anyone remember a story a little while ago about how the FBI had thousands of pages of documents detailing surveillance of non-violent protest groups? Somebody was sueing them to release the documents. I can't seem to find the story, but I distinctly remember reading it.

I may even have authored it, I can't remember.

I'm going to spend some more time looking for that thread, because I think it's critical to this discussion. If someone else finds it, please post it here. Thanks.

I FOUND IT! Amazing...

If you disagree with anyone, like the ACLU, label them terrorists.
Then you can use the 'sneak and peak' provisions of the so-called patriot act to spy on them with out knowing. I guess anyone who questions the government is a terrorist. *whispers* 'police state'

BTW the ACLU is not always correct. It was wrong trying to detract from the minute men of Arizona, But they shared the same side as Bush on that one.

Here I think this is the referred story [although I am not certain since i can't see the original post]
www.thedenverchannel.com...

FBI targets 'disruptive' behavior

Monique Kelso, spokeswoman for the FBI's Denver office, said . . . "Again the FBI doesn't monitor groups or interview individuals unless the FBI receives intelligence or information that such individuals or these groups are planning a violent or disruptive activity," she said.

Disruptive activity!?!?
Isn't that what kids do in the car?
Cause disruptive activity?

This is a vague and blanket excuse to investigate anyone who is breathing.

Here is where the ACLU fights against and wins against police state monitoring.

In 2003, the ACLU settled a lawsuit against Denver for keeping so-called "spy files on peaceful groups since at least the 1950s.

ACLU - right on protecting free speech
wrong aiding criminal immigrants against the efforts of Arizona 'Minute Men'.
