The Border at the Gaza strip will be seeing a huge increase in security in anticipation of next month's withdrawal of settlers from the area. Settlers will be leaving twenty-one locations from the Gaza Strip and four more from the West Bank. The new 'high-tech' barrier will surround Gaza with electronic sensors, fences, watchtowers equipped with remote-control machine guns and hundreds of night vision CCTV. A crossing station at the Erez crossing has already begun construction. The new crossing station will allow passage of 20,000 to 30,000 Palestinian workers a day, three times the number permitted now.

HISTORY Israel has controlled the Gaza Strip and the West Bank since seizing the territory in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Sections of Gaza and the West Bank are already under Palestinian control.

COST In all, about 9,000 settlers will be moved, and about 40,000 soldiers are expected to enforce the withdrawal, which is expected to cost an estimated $2 billion. Israel has asked the United States to pick up much of the cost of moving settlers to new homes in Israel proper.

POLLS Though thousands of protesters have demonstrated against the withdrawal, 65 to 70 percent of Israelis are in favor of it, according to polls.

Although this seems an effective way of keeping attackers out of Gaza it does not seem to be a step in t he direction of peace. With Israeli forces spending huge amounts of money on forcing this withdrawal it seems to be a no-win situation once again for Palestine.

This may keep attackers out but will only fuel their hatred even more and cause more cases of violence and clashes.

yesterday i ran across this article about the Gaza Barrier
here's excerpt

On Thursday, the military laid out its plans for the new barrier,
including new army bases an 22-foot concrete walls around nearby
Israeli communities to stop Palestinian sniper fire.

The new Gaza Barrier draws on experience from the West Bank Barrier Israel is building and the high-tech border fence with Lebanon, the army said, but it will be more advanced.

The Barrier system will surround Gaza with fences, electronic sensors,
watchtowers mounted with remote-control machine guns, and hundreds of vision and night vision cameras, the military said.

[i guess its only available to $ subscribers in archives]

The Israeli' are also going to shut down the several greenhouse farms
that have provided $5 hr. jobs for thousand+ of Gaza Palestinian/Arabs
who will now fend much like the other residents for subsistence $ of
about 2$ per day average.

It keeps popping into my thoughts, that Gaza might become something like
those old 80's movies? where metro areas like NYC and LA became
walled in prison-camp cities filled with the criminals & terrorists that were excommunicated from the civilized world.
