whats with this launch into space to destroy a comet "to seehow it reacts"

could this comet have been on an orbital path with earth, why would they spend millions on this otherwise?

To investigate the innards of it, and also to give clues as to how our solar system was created...it had nothing to do with it approaching us...

NASA had no intention of destroying the comet, they just put a big hole in it to see what's inside.

Earth was never in any danger from this comet.

The information from this impact however could be critical in the event of an actual earth orbit crossin being found.
