A new law requires students to recite the pledge to the Texas flag and observe a moment of silence. Supporters say it helps promote patriotism and build character, but some critics argue that the new state measure violates the First Amendment. They also note the requirement will stretch already thin budgets because a Texas flag must be present in every classroom.

My opinion, Texas takes itself way too seriously. I know they really want to become their own nation, but do they have to be so obvious about it?

and isn't the Texas flag the only flag in the Union allowed to fly at the same height as a US flag? (or something like that)

I never heard that one. If it's true, I'd like to know how that tradition came about.

Has anyone seen that Carlin standup where he talks about putting all the ****-ups away into several of the central states? I say they just lock up Texas, that way they won't have to move the wackos out of there in the first place

I don't know about that one. BUT, the Texas state constitution is the only state constitution which allows for secession of the state from the nation if they so choose.

Don't know that it's mandated, but yes, we Texans do know the pledge to our state flag.

My son (in the Navy) says that it's interesting how few people actually have pride in their nation -- much less in their state. The Texans are the exception to this rule -- though in some cases, I do believe we're Texans first and Americans second, y'all.

Well, the flag at same hieght may come from the fact that Texas was it's own nation until we took it in. So maybe since it was it's own nation wants the respect of it's own stuff.

Anyways, Texas isn't really an American state last I heard they had more Mexican citizens in it then American citizens. Or was that Arizona?
