GOMER: Get Outta My Emergency Room
What they don't tell you is WHEN these terms are used.... To my knowledge, these terms are generally used in nurse's stations or other secured
areas, or when a patient is under anesthesia or is in an otherwise non-conscious state.
It is part of dark humor.... if you worked around death, dying, and disorder as your CAREER, 24/7/365, you need some humor release.. doctors are human
too!
Dark humor is most certainly not intended to humiliate or defame a patient's rights and honors which they are entitled to have respected at ALL
times.
When a doc says, "Looks like this one's a GOMER", some get a chuckle because it is referring to the person as not requiring any significant medical
care (not even stitches...here's 400mg ibuprofen good night). These particular individuals showing up in ERs are pulling doctors away from patients
who are in REAL need of intervention. I do believe they have the right to be treated, however the SYSTEM is set up so that they can get away with
making enough drunken noise (disturbing the ER for hours at a time) while they wait for their care.
Often times a typical GOMER will say something drunkenly like, "boy you guys are LOVIN me aren't ya".
Its a game with a rare few.
