HEADLINE: Security Boosted in US After British Explosions

INTRO: Transportation systems in major U.S. cities are boosting security measures following the deadly bomb attacks in London early today (Thursday). From Washington, VOA's Michael Bowman reports.

TEXT: The Department of Homeland Security, created in the aftermath of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, is urging heightened vigilance of the nation's public transportation infrastructure.

Transit officials in Washington, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and elsewhere are heeding the call.

Cathy Asato is a spokesperson for Washington's Metro Bus and Rail system.

"Metro transit police have deployed our special response teams and explosive-detection canine teams to conduct sweeps of stations, trains and buses. In addition, we have closed our station restrooms temporarily for security reasons."

/// END ACT ///

Authorities are urging public-transportation passengers to report suspicious activities.

Speaking from the G-8 summit in Scotland, President Bush urged vigilance and said he had consulted with Homeland Security officials to discuss the matter.

There were no early indications that the nation's color-coded security threat level was about to be raised.

The State Department has established a hotline for information about U.S. citizens who may have been affected by the London bombings. (SIGNED)
