Perhaps a subtext here is the fear of giving equal power to the subaltern?

Just to bear in mind, the first part of the movie takes place around 1996 - so not the same attitudes as more recently.

That being a crucial theme - these wounds that did not heal.

I was hoping for something more like An American Werewolf in London... but god, sorry, no thanks, sick of the woke PC bs (the star is a troubled teen because he's gay but doesn't want to admit it)...

Yeah well, the gay experience obviously interests me, but would I say it's preachy woke fare?

Far from it, I think, and there's several other characters.

Neither are the grown gay characters unrealistically perfect.

I mean nobody's a hero here (except maybe the brother and sister at the end).

What I do find unrealistic though is how the neighbor can take out a car full of cops, and it's lah-di-dah, business as usual.

But hey, it is "werewolf fantasy".

And of course the theme of aging, as a metaphorical transformation ...

Like the little differences between 1998 and now.

Back then - mind if I smoke, oh yeah whatever.
Nowadays - no gross, you can't smoke in public. You smelly beast!

Like much post-modern horror, also a critique of middle-class suburbia and what lurks beneath.

Similar to An American Werewolf in London or perhaps Elm Street II, the monster here reveals itself in the "real world".

The question is now that the real world knows these things exist, how does it continue forwards (at the end)?

Is it a changed paradigm, or, oh we're just going to pretend it never happened?

In fact, the biggest "heroes" would be the old (heterosexual) couple who open the door ...

I could imagine this continuing as a mini-series - Desperate Werewolves.

That's what I love about "campy" werewolf movies.

The supernatural isn't cooped up in some haunted house, no it ends up rampaging down the lanes.

But society will turn a blind-eye (wink, wink), if you keep your lawn neat and tidy.

Just saying, it's not a premise that would work in current South African suburbs.

Just sniff the neighbor's electric fence, and there's two security vehicles immediately.
