Why did Malcolm X believe Islam was the best religion for his people, as opposed to Christianity?

In an interview he said that Islam was the best religion for his people. He didn't elaborate why. Why do you think he chose Islam and not another religion like Christianity? He's talked about Islam helping people deal with drugs, alcohol, and other vices or moral deficiencies. Christianity can certainly help with that. For some reason he was fixated on exalting Islam and making it seem like only Islam can help people.

Because he was a CIA asset which was supposed to create chaos and division. A Christian in a Christian country does not create so much upheaval as a Muslim.

Probably because he never lived in a Islamic county surrounded by other born and bred muslims. Would probably alter his view.

Why would anyone choose a religion that doesn't exalt Jesus Christ as the only way?

I was thinking this could be it. At the very least, he creates division. Christianity is the largest religion in America. Him promoting Islam will bring some people over to Islam. Just another way to divide people. I think if Islam was the largest religion then he would be promoting Christianity.

Elsewhere, he indicated: while living with fellow non-black Muslims, he felt the same sincerity that he felt with black Muslims.

I think he chose Islam for its simplicity of worship. There's a world of difference between entering into a cathedral and a mosque for the first time. A mosque has a simple interior and lofty exterior. A cathedral has an exquisite interior but ugly exterior.

Simone Weil, one of the greatest champions of Christianity, declared that even the black fetishists had a superior worship to Christians and were less idolatrous. She said their beauty imparts an eternal significance. Goethe, who had declared Christianity as the final religion of mankind, also draws attention to how the Christian worship is limited to devotion and love, neglected beauty and respect.

And from a practical angle, Islam suits the black people's warrior-like temperament better. Their hereafter conception is more earthly and realistic, a genuine paradise, something worth dying for.

Also, unlike Christianity, Islam is genuinely monotheistic. There are no confusing formulations for deity, no additional idols which complicate worship, just one prophet for everyone.

Lastly, it could be the fact that the Christian countries were the last to abolish slavery.

Malcolm was exposed to Christianity when young and rejected it as a religion for slaves and slaveowners (and whites).

He found Islam in prison (as I recall) and went over to that.

A number of leftists at the time were rejecting Dr. King's philosophy of nonviolence and seeking more direct avenues to change. Islam gave them the chance to be different while offering followers a religious / church experience.

Apparently, later in life, he went to Mecca on the Hajj pilgrimage and encountered white Muslims and began to accept them.
this might have led to his assassination.

He must have missed all the muslim slave owners on his walk though the desert. Mohammad himself was prolific slave owner who never once expressed in the slightest sense that the practice was wrong. Actually suggesting abolishment would get you killed.

I studied the Haaj in university, pretty savage if you ask me. Mecca looks beautiful but I bet it smells awful. For example they have had stampedes with death counts rivalling 911! Usually a couple hundred die every year for the religion of peace.

Malcolm X was a member of "the nation of Islam", which is vastly different than mainstream Islam.to the point of being almost unrecognizable by Muslims.

Just speculation, but:

Perhaps because, in this country at least, "Christianity", replete with sermons and other Bible thumping, was used as a justification for slavery for a couple hundred years, if not more.
