The word "e-mail" can now no longer be used in French official communication, including documents, memos, the internet and even e-mails themselves.

The General Commission on Terminology and Neology, part of the French Culture Ministry and affiliated to the Academie Francaise--which outlawed the word "Walkman" in favor of "baladeur" some years ago--prefers the French alternative "courriel."

How ridiculous, I wish Nans was still here to voice her opinion on this strange legislation. Now they want to call it courriel.

The word "courriel" is French Canadian in origin, a French dialect considered a bastardization of the language by traditionalists in France.

People, the french suck. Who cares what they do? They are weak in everyway, and are doing this just to keep themselves busy.

...judging the entire French Population by the actions of their leaders...and judging them all based on your own perceptions of what they do...

...nice...

...are you Americans all arrogant ignorant war-mongers who think nothing about killing thousands to further your own world domination?? Are you ALL heart-less killers, are you ALL merely focussed on immediate gratification... 'give it to me now! Bigger! Faster! More more more'...are you without substance if you are without some obnoxiously large SUV...

...those are some of the perceptions some have of your country, your leaders, your culture...

...is it true?? Does it apply to you??

...probably not...so why apply other blanket general statements to the collective culture of another country...

hey, it's their language. if they want to attempt to fight colloquilisms and slang, good luck to them. it'll be interesting to see if it actually sticks. judging from my junior high teachers' attempts to stop us from saying "like" and all the other less than standard uses of the English language, they probably won't be all that successful. but it'll be interesting to see what happens, none the less.

Geez, something up your bum? I was referring to the French government, not the French as a whole.

This thread was by no means intented to bash the French, I have vowed to keep my opinions on that matter to myself and was simply posting a news item I found "interesting".

It's as rediculous as America saying a cul de sac is now known as a "turn-around," etc. The French have been trying to get rid of foreign words for some time now. I believe they are they only country that is doing that.

The French has dissaponit me in many ways first they start off by not helping us in the Irapi war, then many months later they state e-mail is banned! WHY
For what porpose are these frenchies trying to prove. That the english language is to good for them so they change is to french instead, man thier so full of themselves. Im not trying to dis the french people it's self because i have respect for thier culture, it's just the people that run the country that makes me in a fury. The french should have a say un what they feel.HMMMMMM.....
sounds a little bit like a country that i know off that wont let thier people have asay instead they 'dictate them around' or well thats thier problem.

Funny, we use less anglisism than any other french foreigns, even less than frenchs of France but "we" are suposed to talk a "bastarisation" of french language.

Probably because most people here talk French/English. So we are not completly considered as French or English, but truly, nobody here cares about what peoples say about us.

How ironic, you said that because you were thinking that there was no French Canadian here... Before telling we are hypocrite you should take a look at you.

Any way, never heard something more stupid. Have you ever set a foot in French Canada ? Probably not. Just for fun, it is because we want to separate from Canada that you feel harrassed ? Or it's because we have the right to talk french ( That seems to contrary some people in English Canada )? No, it's probably because it's too hard for you to learn a second language ? It's english Canada that try to assimilate us, wonder why we voted for the liberation at 49% ?

"french canadians are a very hyprocritical group, they have the language police that harass people that use english"

Give me an example, I want to know. But I can give you some good examples of the opposite. English Canada try to assimilate us since about 300 years ( and failed because of a too large number ) and it is suposed to be us that harass people that talk english ? Let me laugh, I've never see an english Canadian who come In Qubec get harassed, but I had to fight many times when I was in Ontario because some dumbass was hating French Canadians. Just look at your schools, do they teach French language as an obligatory part of your education ? sure not, but we teach english and native languages in our schools, not so bad for a "very hyprocritical group" that harass people that use english.

And I can argue about it as long as you want. But let me tell you first, you don't know what you're talking about. And you'll probably never know it because you're not born here and you don't live here. I suggest you to keep yourself occupied instead of judging whole people you'll never be able to understand.

Hmm, another prime example of unity of the world in action.

Maybe the French are feeling a little down and need a pick - me up?

Maybe the constant derision they feel has parted their hair.

Maybe their lack of a military of substance to defend theirs and other world interest leaves them feeling impotent.

Maybe the conjugated form of electronic mail, or whatever it stands for leaves them coughing up their soup.

I don't know why this is so important to them?
