It is getting pretty close to the time for school to be in session.
I'd like to give a bit of advice about something that I have seen. It primarily applies to students in 7th to 12th Grades, but, it may apply to
lower grades in some areas.
Some schools have a "Code of Conduct" or something similar. The "Code" is a list of rules and policies that a student is to follow or face
punishment. It used to be that the "Code" was only in effect during school hours, on school property or at school functions or events. Now some
School Districts will try to enforce the "Code" 24-7-365 no matter where the student is or if school is even in session. The "Code" can be
enforced because of things that are against school policy, but, otherwise are totally legal.
A few examples are the enforcement of the "Code" against students, who went on a trip to Germany during Summer vacation, with their parents. Photos
were posted on Facebook that showed the students drinking beer. At the time they were with their parents and were of legal age in Germany. A
suspension was issued by the school, that required the parents to have to file a lawsuit to have overturned. Even with the suspensions being
overturned, the Judge ruled that the District was able to use other forms of punishment.
Before the age to buy cigarettes was raised to 21, several students were suspended because they were caught smoking. The Students were 18, of legal
age and were not in school or on school property at the time. In one case the Student was at home, in the yard and was seen by a Teacher who was
driving by.
Students have been suspended for legally carrying a firearm for hunting or target shooting. In one case the Student's family was turned into Youth
authorities because the Student was being taught how to shoot.
All you have to do is to look at the news to see how School Boards and School Districts are trying assert more control over students both in and out
of school.
With that being said, here's the advice. TELL YOUR CHILD TO SIGN NOTHING WITHOUT THEM BRINGING IT HOME FOR YOUR REVIEW.
The "Code" is being treated as a legal binding contract, even in States where that type of a contract is illegal for a Minor to enter into. Many
times the Student doesn't even know that they are signing an agreement to abide by the "Code". When the suspensions for the Students who went to
Germany got to Court, it was found that the students were ordered to sign a receipt stating that they had received a School Planner and rulebook.
