Sunday marks the 77th anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal moment in World War II, when thousands of American, British and Canadian soldiers selflessly stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, to help liberate Europe from the grip of the German-led Axis forces.

Without the selfless sacrifices made that day we all very well may be speaking German or Japanese. Over 4000 gave their lives for freedom from tyranny.

Thank you Greatest Generation!!!

I have always had a problem with the moniker the greatest generation.

once you learn about the things they did, how they did in wartime, and the things they dealt with in their lives, it's hard not to. But we are all entitled to opinions.

I know very well what they did. They were reacting to the times and the world they were put in, that is all.

It is the fact that they reacted, how they reacted and succeeded because of it that made them great.

Now look at the current generation. Now compare.

I don't think I am the one with the ego, I don't claim to be the greatest anything. I believe the anyone that accepts the label greatest anything have the ego problem

I have served and accept it was a job I chose, I stepped up and fought when it was my time and do not think that makes you great that you did the right thing, and all of you getting mad at me ask any cop, or military member and most will tell you the same thing and I bet those in the greatest generation would say the same thing. I am not discounting what they did.

This week also sees the 79th anniversary of the battle that saw the turning point in the Pacific War.

The Battle of Midway was fought, and won, by the same sort of men that waded ashore in Normandy.

The Greatest Generation are leaving us at a staggering rate--all my connections with it, by blood, have passed beyond now--remembering the accomplishments of our parents and grandparents keeps their memory fresh.

Well we can say they are better than any other one that followed them...lol. We could argue 1720 to 1750 made a bunch of fine people too but generations naming started in the 20th century.

If they are not the greatest, which one is?

As a Boomer I'm glad to take the title second greatest... Millennials win the well deserve title of the "crappiest"

Depends on what your metric is. I don't know that there was a greatest generation.

Whether something is great or not is subjective, not objective

I think you can measure objectivity... Do you think Gen Z would stand up and do what they did today?

The average age of a RAF pilot at Battle Of Britain was 20. One was only 18.

No argument of them being " The Greatest Generation "

They stepped up and got the job done. Not the only generation to do that, but the most recent, so the memory is still fresh. I hope, and believe, that every generation has the potential to be "The Greatest" when the situation demands it. That is how humankind has achieved all of our greatest moments..Once we lose that drive to survive, we will be well and truly screwed...

They were all young.

My Dad was 19 when he went to the Pacific, he spent his 20th birthday on a Troopship headed for Hawai'i.

They did, in number that'll never be reached again. Or so it's to be hoped!!!

My Dad volunteered the day after Pearl Harbor, even though there was a chance he could have got into the Naval Academy, instead.

I once asked him why he didn't do that--he would have avoided much of the nastiness he experienced.

He simply said, "It wouldn't have been right."

That attitude was not uncommon, anywhere. Your RAF pilots. The sailors on merchant ships, and their escorting destroyers. Marines. GI's. All stood to be counted, when it mattered.

Yes, I do, just like Gen X stepped up after 9/11 and did what is right. I believe any generation would. Now, there will always be those that don't , just like during the "greatest generation" not everyone went and fought. But I believe that any generation when faced with a threat of the Axis or 9/11 levels will step up. If your logic was accurate then we would have no military today because it is mostly the young that make up the military and we have many Gen X, Millenial and Gen Z serving the military honorably today. The problem is not with the populace , it is with the gutless leadership on whether or not we choose to engage an enemy. When asked, I believe we have enough people that would step up to the challenge.

OK, and most pilots in the military today are also young kids, that does not make them the greatest.
