Whatever belief gets you through the day/works for you

I have a different perspective, though.

Love, true love is the only thing that is essential to the survival of the human race.

Love is unconditional.

Been married for over 3 decades to a woman I adore every day.

Love is ugly, love is pain, love is raw. Love puts a knot in your throat. Love puts a tear in your eye that you have to suck back in....

Your story sure put a tear in my eye...Bless your heart

Kinda got the vibe that 'Love' and 'Agape', are herewith seen as a uniquely Christian thing ?
Not too sure about Plato being a Christian though ?

Since my qualifications seem to be lacking, perhaps we might dance ?

Stole that from NarcolepticBuddha's thread on 'Love'.

Socrates/Plato got a seat at the table (shout out) here in the thread as well.
I'd say that the Greeks provided the word, and Jesus gave us the example (though as I wrote earlier, Socrates was well on his way!)
Thanks for the song! (It's been in the back of my head since I wrote the title).

Love is, in large part, selflessness.

In large part, a categorical imperative.

Ummm...you do the feels...then try to define them however you like...

I’ll follow the science...

Frankly...perspective...is only as good as the factual data under consideration...but more specifically that which wasn’t considered...that which wasn’t used to formulate your..opinion...

So what form of lust drove Sally Becker to enter a war zone and risk her life to save kids?
www.roadtopeace.org.uk...
www.sallybecker.uk...
Science has its limits.
(Follow the science.. where have I heard that before? Hmmm)

edit on 14-3-2021 by zosimov because: (no reason given)

Just now getting around to listening to this.

It's really good. Interesting themes, too!

Ummm...it could have been any number of things that backstages her choice to place herself in harms way...

I suppose we’d have to interview her in depth to find the underpinning reasons...

Now...obviously your claiming she did it out of love...again...love is a chemical response to stimuli...and gratification is the end result of that response...therefore...I contend that her altruism was merely derived from the feelings created in her brain as a result of stimulating the production of certain euphoria producing chemicals...

You can call it love if you choose...however...if you attempt to define what that concept entails...then just be honest and factual...

Of course I can call it love, don't need your permission, nor care if you find the sentiments in the thread honest or factual. Philosophy is a different type of science.

Your opinion is noted, though.

Thanks for your reply Zos.
Sorry about the earworm. ( Not sorry. LoL ! )

Maybe Love is what's left, after stripping 'everything' away ?

You know : reduced to where it resonates with : 'God', the Tao, and the Unified-Field.
But not quite down at that bare-bones level.
Just close, and vibing.

Have a memory of a movie, where an elderly man had become infirm, and one of his daughters came to live and take care of him.
She was sorta estranged with her more local sister, or their relationship was awkward somehow.
At one point : the sisters are chatting, around the there of failed relationships, lost-loves, and such.
The caretaker sister says something about how fortunate that she was there to care for their dad.
Local sister says : " Yeah. Dad's lucky to have you. "
Caretaker sister says : " No : I'm lucky to have him. " ( To take care of. )

There was an 'Ah ha !' moment for me in there, as a representation of Love and dedication.
It was beyond 'duty', because she recognized how alive it made her feel.
She had realized what Love was, to her.

I really love this interpretation--fits in well w/ that Rumi quote glend posted on p 1. Thanks for sharing the anecdote too (caregiving is such a good example of a loving act).
