A good book to read is ' Biohazard ' by Ken Alibek. This is a fairly detailed account of the Soviet bioweapons program. Ebola was acquired, and one of their scientists ( name was Ustinov ) accidentioly injected himself with Ebola and died.
Anyway he claims that they did cross smallpox successfully with other germs such as gas gangrene. They liked crossing smallpox because it was so contagious. Crossing Ebola and pox would be like trying to join a dog and cat together( they r too incomppatible ).

Not really. Gene splicing is a legitimate means of creating new agents. Both smallpox and ebola are viruses which are extremely deadly. Smallpox, which is easier to transmit, and ebola, which has a higher kill ratio, would be the ideal pair in a biological weapon. I think the notion of splicing these two viruses together is a very scary, yet very probable possibility.
