A couple of years back there was a big fuss when a solar observatory was suddenly closed and the area was restricted.

Whatever happened about that, what was the conclusion?

I've seen a lot of threads about it, but they go off topic or have so many posts in them saying contradictory things that it's hard to follow them?

Did we ever get a satisfactory explanation?

I think it is Sunspot National Solar Observatory.

Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico.
The FBI shut it down and raided it and wouldn't let the employees go near it. The official story was that a janitor was downloading and sharing child pornography with the observatory's internet.
Zaphod made some comments in one of the threads though and he seemed to know what was really going on.

Yes, that's the one. It seemed really strange that they cleared the entire site for a couple of weeks. Even people who had accomodation there were evacuated. Did they think that the site was booby trapped or something?

From what I can remember, there was something about the FBI looking for a misplaced bag of aircraft maintenance parts.

Yeah...the given excuse doesnt match at all with the response to the given reason. It would be a simple collection of all computers and arrest the offender.

I'd like to know what the guy's name is and find out where he is today to see if he is in jail or was cleared and is back at work.

Mystery Solved? FBI Reveals Why It Shut Down the New Mexico Solar Observatory By Ewan Palmer On 9/20/18 at 6:10 AM EDT

Too bad that C. Wray and the entire agency is about as ethical as J. Edgar Hoover was back in the day.

Thanks guys, I'll have a read up on this.

Seems most likely that there's far more to this than the official story.

If Zaphod has some inside line I'm sure it'd be well worth hearing.

It was supposed to be a totally routine event, and utterly mundane. Someone screwed up, so they came up with a quick cover story, then doubled down, then finally realized simply shutting up was their best option from the beginning, so finally shut the hell up.

A couple fringe physicist types said it was the huge seeming spaceships near the sun that week, but I'll defer to Zaphod as I trust his sources more than crackpot fringies with so-so track records for accuracy.

Of course, some of Zaph's sources confirm some seeming crackpot stuff, so some rare few cracked pots might hold water, it seems.

But since that observatory does not hold a monopoly in seeing the sun, I'd again defer to Zaphod that it was mundane and arse covering, but not involving kiddie porn which is the goto dog wagger these days.

So what was the mundane event? The busting kiddie pr0n freak network, or something else?

Every so often someone will tell me something that has me shaking my head, thinking they're totally nuts, and then out of the blue a few months later someone else tells me something really similar. That's half the fun.

Something else that I can't give details on. The whole porn thing was them doubling down on their initial screw up. Apparently someone figured that was the best way to get people looking another direction, and wound up drawing all kinds of attention.

Cover-up with fake "Janitor" excuse. We will not know anything until someone on the inside comes forward with new info.
