Thanks for sharing.
Always fun to scan the images for anomalies

It is not on the GigaPan, you can find part of it in the lower right corner, oddly enough the cup is cut off.

And we all know that Australia is a small country in New Zealand. Somewhere just off Fiordland... Bloody kiwis..

That ‘handle’ isn’t a handle. It’s one side at an unexpected perspective. Just a plain rock.

Really? Um, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you. Interested?

There is light coming through where the handle is.

So if it is a rock, its a rock with a handle.

No, there's no light coming through.
If there was we would see the shadow of the handle on the cup's surface on the areas the handle connects to the cup, and we do not see that. What I think we are seeing is some kind of "bas relief" on that rock's surface, so we see the shadow inside that lower area.

Here's the original NASA image.
This is a closeup of that original image, where the "handle" doesn't look as much like a handle:

Probably just a shadow effect as you say, combined with pareidolia.

Well if there on Australia, how come we rarely see boomerangs just laying about? Obviously cant be in Australia or there would be boomerangs everywere. Maybe that particular rover landed in newzealand or Nevada or something.
Apparently New Zealand doesn't stay in the same place on the map, according to the internet, so it might be a hard target to hit. Might be easier to actually land on Mars.

This thread is giving me depression.

There are better finds on Mars than this.

It's difficult to scour the images now, because JPL decided to "update the curiosity image page to be more web 2.0ey!"
All they did was screw it up, for consecutive image viewing.

They slowed down my workflow of looking through the images, to the point that I gave up on it.
If there are some secrets there, that they did this to help obscure... You can keep your secrets NASA, I don't care.

I look at them here. Near the top it shows the sol number like this

... > Curiosity > Sols > ←2534 / Most Recent Sol
you can go through the images sol by sol. You can click on some of the images to make them bigger.

If I had some clay I would make a model of what I mean.

I'll try to find a way.

And to the left of that, we have a gramophone or microfilm viewer:

You are full of it!! There is no such thing as “microfilm” and how would we recognize alien technology if it is truly alien?!?!!

I just tried downloading “microfilm” from the App Store and either you can only get it on Amazon Prime or it doesn’t exist!!

(microfilm roll!)

PS - I want to go to Amazon Prime in a blacker than black TR3B v.4 one day...

ETA: Not all jug handles attach at the bottom and just jut out... just sayin’

Well, ok... you got me. In the name of full transparency, I hadn't had my coffee and couldn't remember the spelling for "microfiche" ... or get it close enough for spellcheck to help!

All better, now... and "Hiya!"

Still think it looks a little like an old wax playing gramophone, tho

Interesting picture! The lighting sure is cool around the "handle"

Is there any sense of scale? How large is the object?

On quick glance my eyes see a cup! Maybe it's just an illusion but wow!

The rovers always have been... noteworthy with the odditys relating to them. The cleaning events where dust that's been caking them just washes away? its hard not to have some skepticism relating to them.
