I reached out to someone that may know. I should hear back tonight. It might be one of the XL models, when they were testing different configurations before settling on the cranked kite.

It was a model of the General Dynamics E-7 STOVL concept. NASA Ames did some wind tunnel testing in the 1980s.

Thank you! I hadn't heard of that one. I'll have to do some reading on it.

Didn't they talk about reactivating at least one if not both XL's a few years back for further research?

I vaguely remember that from back in the 80's. But I didn't think it even got to the mock up stage, just concept art like the forward swept wing variant they talked about. Good find.

What is that on the port side of the aircraft- looks somewhat like a X-37...

I think it’s an auxiliary air intake for the vectored thrust system they were trying out on this aircraft...there is a lot more info on the secret projects forum on the aircraft along with more pictures etc etc.a reply to: GD

Oops...just re-read that question by GD...he was referring to the sat picture and that is I think a smaller scale model of the E7 used for wind tunnel testing. a reply to: Silentvulcan

Speaking of the XLs, the single seat aircraft is currently in paint at the AF Flight Test Museum, being restored.
