The Liberal Democrats have pledged to cancel Brexit if they come to power at the next general election. Members voted for the new policy at their party conference in Bournemouth after it was moved by their former leader, Sir Vince Cable
Regarding 2010, they didn't win and were a junior party in the coalition so again had no mandate to implement their policy on university fees.

In exchange for getting some of their own ideas implemented and not all Lib Dems voted for it. They got the alternative vote referendum and fixed term Parliament act though.

Given the split in voting it looks like they gave their MP's a free vote. Blame the MP's who voted for it rather than the party.

But if the public voted them into office and this is their publicly declared position prior to the election then it has gone back to the public to vote on albeit via a different kind of vote.

I think to do it with out a second referendum is just asking for trouble, if they're going to do this then they need to say that they're going to at least put it back to the public to make the decision.
I can see what the lib-dems are trying to do, they're trying to paint themselves as the "anti-brexit party" to gain a few votes but I doubt that they will make any huge gains with this tactic.
Only a matter of time now before we get a General Election so time will tell. If they win a majority (and lets face it nobody expects that to happen but..IF) then they would have won on a election promise to revoke article 50 so I guess they could justify that way but again, its not going to happen, this is just the Lib-Dems trying to sweep up some extra votes from the more hardcore elements of Remain.

In a way it is democratic, they are putting forward their intentions before an election (let's assume we will have one very soon) and voters will get to decide at the ballot box.
They do have form for lying, which is something we expect from our politicians of course.
